Schools Update Policy to Allow Off-Campus Religious Instruction

In compliance with Ohio House Bill 8, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education has updated its policy to allow students to attend off-campus religious education during the school day. The new policy, discussed at the board’s February meeting, permits students to be released for up to one hour per week for religious instruction, provided parents submit a written request.

The policy includes safeguards to ensure that participation is voluntary and that students remain academically accountable. Parents must provide documentation, and students are responsible for making up missed work. Teachers and administrators have received training on implementing the policy fairly and consistently.

Community response has been mixed, with some parents welcoming the change and others expressing concerns about disruptions to the school day. The district has pledged to monitor the policy’s implementation and make adjustments as needed, seeking feedback from parents, students, and staff.

The update reflects the district’s commitment to respecting religious freedoms while maintaining high academic standards. District officials are confident that the policy will be implemented in a way that serves the interests of all students.
